SOT Survey of the Old Testament 2 credits. Orientation of the student to the content and theological message of each book of the Old Testament. The focus is on the macroscopic perspective and the relevance of the Old Testament to the present. Includes discussion of key issues in scholarly debate and liberal-critical attacks. As an Old Testament professor, I struggled with how to teach the Book of Proverbs and the genre of Wisdom Literature in general to my seminary students. As I read and re-read Proverbs, however, I saw it contained many character stereotypes. It is a very contemporary book, for it shows the qualities that contribute to success or failure in life over a long period.

"Therefore (and we must note the "Therefores" of Scripture) every scribe (Bible Teacher) who is instructed unto the 'Kingdom of Heaven' is like unto a Householder, who bringeth forth out of his Treasure things NEW and OLD." The "OLD" things are the "TYPES" of the Old Testament, and the NEW. So, the second key in reading the Old Testament is you must keep your eyes open for the “One to come,” as every one of the 39 books of the Old Testament point to the coming Messiah. Key #3.

Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible as interpreted among the various branches of Judaism the Hebrew Bible is not only the primary text of instruction for a moral life but also the historical record of God’s promise, first articulated in his covenant with Abraham, to consider the Jews his chosen people. Christians, on the other hand, view it as the prophecy of the advent of Jesus. The Old Testament is the first section of the Christian Bible, based primarily upon the Hebrew Bible, a collection of religious writings by ancient Israelites. It is the counterpart to the New Testament, the second portion of the Christian Bible. The Old Testament canon varies between Christian Churches; Protestants and Latter-Day Saints accept only the books found in the canon of the Hebrew.
